Loaves and Fishes of Lowndes County serves area for over decade
Loaves and Fishes of Lowndes County serves nearly 2,000 meals a week
COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) – Loaves and Fishes has been serving hot meals to Lowndes County for over a decade.
Through the years, it has worked to grow its kitchen staff, volunteers, and outreach in the community.
Loaves and Fishes of Lowndes County serves nearly 2,000 meals a week, but serving up food for the community takes an army of volunteers.
“In 2021, we have served 25,000 of those pickup meals and we had 67,000 in 2022 and this year we are on track to serve roughly 85,000 to 95,” Steven Greenough, Director of Loaves and Fishes.
The Soup Kitchen has 18 different organizations ready to serve the community during November.
Director Steven Greenough said the organization is always looking to get more people involved in its mission.
“Once those people are in there they tend to stay. Nobody drops out once they realize this is such a wonderful humbling program that you can feed people,” Greenough said.
As it has grown, the organization continued to remind people it has roots in the community.
Over the last year, Loaves and Fishes has worked to grow its marketing and social media platforms to get the word out.
“We realized a lot of people did not realize there was a soup kitchen in Columbus, Mississippi. Which surprised me. And it gave me thought that we needed to start and promote ourselves in the community for the benefit of the community. And to benefit those who don’t know there is a soup kitchen,” Greenough said.
Sometimes food is the best way to bring a community together.
“We would have a lot of people going hungry. If we didn’t serve them those meals, there are not many other places they would be able to get a hot meal,” Greenough said.
Loaves and Fishes of Lowndes County serves meals six days a week and through more volunteers, it is looking to expand that number.
