Columbus Man Charged with Murder

COLUMBUS, Miss. – (WCBI) A Columbus man is charged with murder after a fatal shooting over the weekend.

30-year old James Newsome made his initial court appearance this afternoon, where his bond was set at $250,000.

The shooting happened around 3:30 a.m Sunday. Police say Newsome was driving southbound on Highway 45 with 47-year old John Easley, Jr.Newsome and Easley reportedly were fighting over a handgun, when Easley was shot in the head.

Newsome tried to flee, but was arrested a short time later.
