STARKVILLE, Miss. (WCBI) – It’s that beautiful time of year when the flowers are in bloom. But, if you don’t have a green thumb or can’t enjoy your own garden, Mississippi State University has something for you.
At the Veteran’s Memorial Rose Garden the blossoms are showing off. 350 roses are now in bloom, displaying full colors in pinks, reds, oranges and yellows.
“The main bloom occurs about this time of the year in the spring. It will start blooming around mid-April and we’ll have a large flush of bloom that will last through the mid part of June. Then it rests a little bit when it gets hot. In the fall when it cools off, say in mid-September, the roses will start re-blooming and some will bloom until late November,” said Dr. Pamela Collins, the Director of Gardens.
The rose garden was planted in 2006 on the edge of North Farm near the Thad Cochran Research and Technology Park. It’s a unique garden for the area, and sure brightens things up a bit.
“At Mississippi State we don’t have a lot of formal gardens and for this to be out here particularly at an experiment station farm is rather unique. It’s right at the entrance to the farm. We have a new boulevard that’s going to showcase the research and technology park and so it’s part of that landscape,” said Collins.
At the Veteran’s Memorial Rose Garden, all different colors and varieties of roses welcome you to the beautiful and peaceful place.
“I see people come out here in the evenings. They bring their children, they bring their elderly parents. They come out here on their bicycles and it’s part of a green space that we can’t provide much anywhere else right now,” Collins said.
Collins says they use a combination of organic fertilizers and standard chemicals to keep the roses so healthy.
