Electric co-op internet bill passes in state Senate, moves on to governor

JACKSON, Miss. (WCBI) – Supporters call it a win for rural Mississippi and the prospect for more internet options.

The state Senate passed legislation Wednesday morning that would give electric cooperatives the option to provide high speed internet to its customers.

Right now, co-op’s do not have that opportunity because of a state law.

Northern District Public Service Commissioner Brandon Presley has pushed the measure.

He said the legislation would only give co-ops the option to provide the service. It would not be required.

The bill now goes to the governor for his signature, before becoming law.
