Globetrotters visit Tupelo elementary school with message of teamwork
TUPELO, MISS. (WCBI) – Students at a Tupelo elementary school learned how teamwork can help prevent bullying.
For this lesson, Harlem Globetrotter Briana “Hoops” Green used the word “TEAM” to help teach an anti-bullying message, in a fun and interactive way.
“A program the Globetrotters have for teaming up with schools, stands for talk, empathy, ask questions and mobilize,” said Green.
“Hoops” will join her teammates from the storied team on the court at the Bancorpsouth Arena January 21 and she used her time at the school assembly to encourage kids to come to the show.
As only the 15th woman added to the Globetrotters’ roster in its 93 year history, Green also wanted her audience to know that hard work, dedication and team work are vital skills for success.
“Whether it be, basketball player, doctor, lawyer, teacher, anything, you have to understand, you don’t just wake up like this, you’re not just amazing one day, or good at something one day, you have to invest a lot of time, have to put hours in, have to practice every single day, just going to practice with your team isn’t good enough, if it’s something you’re passionate about, positive, go for it,” Green said.
Students and staff were not only wowed by Hoops’ magical basketball skills, but also inspired by her message.
“Our teachers are really pushing that team concept, working together collaboratively for the betterment of our school,” said Lawhon Principal Mark Enis.
“If you keep following your dreams, doing good in school, you can get to a lot of places by making good grades and stuff at school, can accomplish a lot of things,” said fifth grader Shaniya Cannady.
“Don’t matter what nobody tells you, you can accomplish anything, don’t let nobody bring you down, just get on your way back up,” said fifth grader Jackson Tiggs.
Globetrotters take their “ABCs of Bullying Prevention Program” to every city on their tour.
The Harlem Globetrotters take on the Washington Generals January 21 at 2 p.m.
