$2M in federal dollars to go to University of Mississippi marijuana research

OXFORD, Miss. (WCBI) – Millions in federal dollars will support the University of Mississippi in continuing and improving its marijuana research.

The National Institute of Drug Abuse awarded a new five-year contract and $2 million to the University of Mississippi School of Pharmacy to grow cannabis along with research materials.

Because cannabis remains a Schedule I drug in the U.S., it is not legal for researchers to use federal funding to study the cannabis products that are available to consumers in dispensaries.

The university’s pharmacy school plans to create a master’s program in dietary supplements and medical cannabis.
