Ex-death row inmate in Mississippi re-sentenced in baby death

NATCHEZ, Miss. (AP) – A man who spent 16 years on Mississippi’s death row has been re-sentenced for the death of his girlfriend’s 6-month-old daughter more than 15 years ago.

News outlets reported that Jeffrey Havard was sentenced Monday to life in prison without the possibility of parole.

Havard contends he did not kill Chloe Britt in 2002.

Circuit Judge Forrest “Al” Johnson ordered that Havard’s death sentence be overturned in September after the Mississippi Supreme Court ordered a hearing to determine if a new trial was needed because of changes in medical briefings about shaken baby syndrome.

The court affirmed Havard’s conviction but overturned his death sentence.

Havard, who is now 40, says he accidentally dropped the child. His lawyers promise further appeals.
