COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) – Southside Missionary Baptist Church celebrated 93 years of service today but they also dedicated part of the church’s campus to a former pastor who made a huge difference with the congregation.
Isaac Lacy, Jr and his entire family attended the church service and dedication for his late father, Pastor Isaac Lacy Sr. Lacy died in a car accident in the late 1990s but the impact he made on the congregation lives on.
“He was a people’s person and I think just the relationship that he formed with the members here is still in their hearts. They still talk about the fun memories of Pastor Lacy and all that he gave. A preacher par excellent. But then a pastor with the love of the people in his heart,” says Reverend Rayfield Evins of Southside Missionary Baptist Church.
After service, hundreds gathered outside of the building that is now dedicated to Lacy. A prayer was recited and balloons were released in his honor. Lacy’s son says his father would have been humbled.
“I initially think that he would’ve been very proud as well as honored but like I said he was humble person. He didn’t look for no great reward. He always said you don’t look for your reward here on earth from man. You look for your reward from heaven,” says Lacy, Jr.
The church service also included a praise dance, a poetic reading and a recognition of the church’s long time members.
