Video: West Amory Re-enacts Titanic
AMORY, Miss. (WCBI) – The blockbuster film “Titanic” helped make Leonardo Dicaprio one of the biggest stars in the world. Some local students got a taste of what it may have been like to be aboard the great, but doomed ship.
It was all fun and games for students at West Amory Elementary as they wrapped up their lesson on the Titanic. The doomed ocean liner sank in the North Atlantic more than 100 years ago.
“Ms. Ullman, one of our 2nd grade teachers, was so inspired and just wanted to study the Titanic. We are in full implementation with Common Core and she thought that this unit would be a great unit for our students to learn what really happened with the Titanic, how it occurred, why it happened. Then for the students to actually have some application, to apply the learning that they’ve been doing for the last couple of weeks,” says Letricia French, Assistant Principal at West Amory.
The 2nd grade teaching staff teamed up to re-create the scene which included games, a photo booth and refreshments. Students dressed in period costumes and learned about the lives of Titantic passengers.
Students also presented speeches about the passenger they represented.
French says the event was a great teaching tool and will create lasting memories for the children.
