Winston County Head Start celebrates Black History Month

WINSTON COUNTY, Miss. (WCBI) – They may be little. But the students at the Winston County Head Start are learning and sharing for Black History Month.

Staff members took the theme “Strength of Our Roots” and chose poems, songs and quotes to teach the children.

Then the children presented what they are learning to family and teachers.

It’s a celebration that started with the youngest children and included the entire school.

“Today we are celebrating black history. Celebrating our roots. This is a time when parents, staff and the community come together. We are teaching our students about their black history and you know we can’t start them too young,” said reg. administrator Irene Smith.

This Head Start has its own legacy. The Winston County school has been serving local children for 54 years.

Right now, there are 188 students enrolled in Head Start and 48 in Early Head Start,
