Keeping A Safe House

CHICKASAW COUNTY, Miss.(WCBI) – Before leaving for grandma’s for the holidays, remember to lock up.

That’s the word from law enforcement.

“From Thanksgiving on to the first of the year our break-in rate picks up,”said Chickasaw County Sheriff James Meyers.

In fact, statistics show a home is six percent more likely to be broken in to this time of year.

Law enforcement say there are a few things you can do before heading out of town.

“When you leave home, don’t put on social media where you’re going. Try your best to keep it off of that social media. Everyone looks at social media and when they see that you’re gone like that, that’s a good time to come on in your house,”said Houston Police Chief Billy Voyles.

“Everybody wants to show the Christmas tree on Facebook but when you put that stuff on there, it’s sad to think, there are people that look for that type of stuff to where they can come and target your house,”said Meyers.

Chickasaw County Sheriff James Meyers says having extra set of eyes on your home helps.

“If you have any real valuables put it in the safe or carry them with you. You could buy camera system, whether it be a deer camera or an alarm system, Or just as much as putting a sign on a tree in the driveway that says monitored by surveillance,”said Meyers.

Voyles says if alarm systems aren’t your thing, there are other ways to keep unwanted guests out.

“Before you leave your house make sure you leave a light on, leave the TV on or something, the radio. Something that will make racket. That will help out a whole lot,”said Voyles.

The Chickasaw Country Sheriff’s Department offers home checks for travelers.
