Groups continue protest & call for Harry Sanders to resign

LOWNDES COUNTY, Miss. (WCBI)- A group of pastors in Lowndes County says they will continue to call for District One Supervisor Harry Sanders to resign.

More than ten pastors and faith leaders from various denominations attended the board of supervisors meeting Monday morning, asking Sanders to step down following racist remarks he made to a newspaper reporter.

Various groups, including the NAACP, have called for Sanders resignation since the remarks were made public in June.

The pastors call the statements -quote- “hurtful, insensitive, and inaccurate” and said his resignation as board president is not enough.

“Repentance is not just the acknowledgment that our actions or our behavior have been wrong. But it’s following that up with doing the right thing. The right thing would b for Mr. Sanders to resign immediately and to let the process of healing begin,” said Bishop Scott Volland of The Bridge.

“We live maybe four miles apart from one another. And for him to show his true nature truly says that a lot of people – myself included – have been deceived. But his true nature has now been shown, so he needs to do the right thing and the right thing is for him to step down,” said Dr. Stan McCrary, pastor of Friendship M.B. Church.

A group of protesters also gathered outside the meeting calling for Sanders’ resignation.
