LOWNDES COUNTY, Miss. (WCBI) — One man is dead and another is in jail as Valentine’s Day gets off to a deadly start in Lowndes County.
Lowndes County detectives aren’t releasing many details, but sources tell WCBI that 17-year-old Ronagale Outlaw, a student at Starkville High, is being held in connection with the shooting death of 23-year-old Tremaine Macon. The shooting occurred just minutes after midnight at the Crossroads lounge on Highway 182 at the Lowndes-Oktibbeha County line.
Detectives would not say whether a handgun has been recovered. But, they say the investigation continues and others could be charged.
Lowndes County Coroner Greg Merchant says bystanders tried to rush Macon to OCH Regional Medical Center in Starkville, but he was pronounced dead shortly after arriving there. The first car he was being transported in ran out of gas not far from the club and he was transferred to a second car.
The club’s owner, Sylvester Harris, was charged by state Alcohol Beverage Control agents with alcohol violations that were not tied to the shooting.
The rural nightclub has been around for years and was one of several that once dotted the area before the new Highway 82 was built. It attracts customers from Lowndes, Clay, Oktibbeha and Noxubee counties and witnesses said a large crowd was attending a Valentine’s party.
This morning’s shooting was the first major incident at the club in almost three years.
