LOUISVILLE, Miss. (WCBI) – Legion State Park has been a fixture in the Louisville area for generations. Now locals are concerned about what tomorrow will bring.
“Unless the revenue crisis that we are facing turns around, it’s just like a family budget. At some point, you have to start making plans if you don’t see light at the end of the tunnel,” says Senator Giles Ward, who represents Winston, Neshoba, and Leake counties.
The Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries & Parks Commission held its monthly meeting at Legion Park and surveyed the park’s current condition.
“We are blessed to have a lot of parks, but the downside of that is they are extremely expensive to operate and to keep on the type of basis that we want our parks to look like,” says Ward.
Despite possible budget cuts, supporters have made it known that they value Legion State Park.
Jerry Munro of the Mississippi Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks Commission says he’s aware of how much the community values the park.
“The outpouring of support by the local community is above what we’ve seen at other places. I would not see any action here at this park as far as I could tell,” says Munro.
Senator Ward says that for now, Legion State Park will remain open for business.
“If you live in the Golden Triangle area or with in traveling distance of Louisville and Winston County, come see Legion State Park. You’re going to be amazed at just how beautiful this place is. There are cabins available for weekend rentals, there are RV pads, there are two lakes with wonderful fishing. It’s just a great hidden treasure and we’d love to extend a genuine and cordial invitation to you,” says Ward.
During the meeting, the Commission discussed pending legislative bills, new fishing laws, and license sales.
All of the buildings at Legion State Park are listed with the National Registry of Historic Places.
