Tupelo mayor requests to greet President Trump during Tupelo visit
TUPELO, Miss. (WCBI) – Tupelo Mayor Jason Shelton has offered to give official greetings to President Donald Trump when the President visits the All-America City for the second time in a year.
In a letter dated October 8, Mayor Shelton wrote he would request the quote “Opportunity to officially greet you when you arrive at or depart from the Tupelo Regional Airport, or when you arrive at or depart from the Bancorpsouth Arena.”
The letter goes on to say the Mayor did not have the chance to officially greet the President when he visited Tupelo last November at a campaign rally for Senator Cindy Hyde-Smith.
Shelton, who is a Democrat, said he understands there are a lot of logistics involved with the Presidential visit, but he would like the opportunity to welcome President Trump to Tupelo.
“I wanted to make a formal request to, as mayor of the city of Tupelo, to greet the President of the United States as he arrives in the city. That’s something that as mayor I think would be appropriate, regardless of political party, regardless of who’s supporting whom, to extend that official greeting on behalf of the city,” Shelton said.
President Trump will headline a campaign rally for Lieutenant Governor Tate Reeves. Reeves faces Democrat Jim Hood in the November 5 election.
