Alvin Holmes loses primary after 44 years in House
MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) – State Rep. Alvin Holmes, the longest serving member of the Alabama House of Representatives, has lost his bid for another term.
Political newcomer Kirk Hatcher on Tuesday night defeated Holmes in the Democratic primary runoff for House District 78 in Montgomery. Unofficial returns show that Hatcher captured 57 percent of the vote.
Holmes was first elected to the House of Representatives in 1974. He filed the 1992 lawsuit that took the Confederate battle flag off the Alabama Capitol’s dome.
During his 44-years in the Alabama Legislature, Holmes became known for a trademark mix of humorous and incendiary remarks during floor debates.
