Attorneys speak out on murder case centered around a former OPD officer

OXFORD, Miss. (WCBI) – An attorney for the family of a woman allegedly murdered by a former Oxford police officer says he’s conducting an independent investigation into the crime.

Matthew Kinne, 38, was arrested and charged with the murder of 32 year old, Dominique Clayton.

The Oxford woman was found shot to death in her home Sunday by her eight year old son.

Kinne, who was an officer with the Oxford Police Department, was arrested and charged with the murder.

Clayton’s family confirmed she had dated Kinne.

The city of Oxford fired Kinne, who is being held without bail.

Now, Attorney Carlos Moore has been hired by Clayton’s family, to conduct an independent investigation.

“We want justice done, short and simple and we want justice, not only in the criminal arena, but if facts warrant it, in the civil arena, that means holding the city of Oxford accountable,” said Moore.

Moore said his investigation will look at whether Kinne was on duty at the time of the alleged murder.

Meanwhile, Kinne is being represented by Attorney Tony Farese, who said his client is presumed innocent until proven guilty and he also plans to conduct an independent investigation into the crime.

Farese says he has met with Kinne, who is being held without bond in the Panola County Jail.

Farese says he is conducting an investigation into the case and said he couldn’t comment about any relationship between Kinne and Clayton.

“I would encourage people to pray for the Clayton family, and to give everyone time to mourn, it’s traumatic for everyone involved, including my client’s family. Oxford is a wonderful city, wonderful place, this is a very unfortunate situation and we will proceed accordingly,” said Farese.

A preliminary hearing could be next, if Kinne requests one. Farese says he expects the case to go before the next Lafayette County Grand Jury.
