Northeast Mississippi remembers law officers who made ultimate sacrifice

TUPELO, Miss. (WCBI) – Law enforcement officers who have made the ultimate sacrifice were honored at a solemn ceremony Thursday evening in Tupelo.

The annual Northeast Mississippi Fallen Officers Memorial was held at the Elvis Presley Birthplace and Museum.

Names of law officers from Mississippi who have been killed in the line of duty were read. There was music, prayer and guest speakers, including District Attorney John Weddle and Caroline Stauffer Turney, whose brother, Tupelo Police Sergeant Gale Stauffer was killed in the line of duty in 2013.

“We just want to honor those that are now helping keep our city safe, community safe, helping us sleep well at night and remember those no longer with us,” said Kim Rushing, of “Wives of Warriors.”

“It really does mean a lot to our family, for people to remember Gale and all the officers that have lost their lives doing what they do best and what they loved, it gives us a little bit of comfort knowing people haven’t forgotten,” said Caroline Stauffer Turney.

Cadets in Class B 62 at the North Mississippi Caw Enforcement Training Center were on hand to watch the ceremony.

This marks the 20th year the memorial service has been held to honor Northeast Mississippi law enforcement officers killed in the line of duty.
