Local restaurant serves more than a meal on Cinco de Mayo

COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI)- Cinco De Mayo is a day that celebrates the Mexican Army’s victory over the French Empire in the battle of Puebla in 1862.

For one local family, however, it’s more than just a celebration.

Authentic Mexican food and a little bit of history are things the average customer at the Tampico Bay Mexican Restaurant in Columbus can expect to receive with each visit.

The Rosales family has been sharing their culture with the community ever since they opened their business 12 years ago.

They see Cinco De Mayo as the perfect opportunity to serve both a hot meal and a history lesson.

“It’s one of the best days of the year. It’s one of the days where we have most of the people that are regulars come out and support us. We have a lot of new people pouring in. It’s a time for local restaurants, none of them are chains, to actually get good, good business,” said co-owner Christopher Rosales.

Restaurant Owner Carlos Rosales says there are some people who don’t know the full history behind the celebratory day. He says the day has gained popularity in America over the years as more alcohol companies capitalize on the holiday.

“Many people, they know some, or they’ve heard it before in history. We always say and share the story, you know, we’re very proud to share,” said Carlos Rosales.

“It’s a special day for Mexico, getting their independence from France,” said Christopher Rosales.

Employees said the day has proven to be very popular in the Columbus community– Even when it falls on a typically slow business day.

“During the past years we’ve had tornado watches, and people still come for Cinco De Mayo. I guess weather or days does not matter. We’ve been lucky enough to have the support from the community… One of the things they come for is the specials. Everyone wants a special and we give them the special for that day,” said co-owner Roberto Rosales.

Christopher Rosales also said the holiday, as well as the restaurant its self, is more than just a monetary boost.

“It’s just something that has brought us closer together. We get to work with each other every day, and we get to support each other every day and what more can you ask for with that, you know,” said Christopher Rosales.

Mexican Independence Day is celebrated every year on September 16th.
