Sensitive Documents Disposed Of Safely Through ‘Shred Day’
TUPELO, Miss. (WCBI) – The Mississippi Attorney General’s office is helping combat identity theft by providing a secure way for people to dispose of sensitive documents. The annual “Shred Day” was held at several sites across the state.
In Tupelo a mobile shredder was set up at the Wal-Mart on South Gloster. People brought trash bags full of documents with important, personal information and the papers were shredded on site.
Officials with the consumer protection division of the Attorney General’s office say it’s important to take safeguards to keep personal information from getting into the wrong hands.
“Things we wouldn’t think about , that they’re casing businesses, casing certain places just to make a mistake, for instance, just ripping up a piece of paper that may have your ID on it, social security number and not being able to shred it as finely as a shredder , somebody can step on that piece of paper inside, take it outside and your information is on that piece of paper,” said Vanecca Green, with the consumer protection division of the Attorney General’s office.
Green also says the Attorney General’s office lets the public know about “Shred Day” weeks in advance on its website.
Shred Day was also held in Jackson, Hattiesburg and D’Iberville.
