New Shelter For Tupelo Lee Humane Society Could Open This Summer

TUPELO, Miss. (WCBI) – A new shelter for the Tupelo Lee Humane Society could be up and running by the summer.

Construction of the new shelter off of Cliff Gookin Boulevard has been underway for about a year now.

The $1.7 million facility will triple the amount of space currently available to the humane society, from around 6,000 square feet to nearly 18,000 square feet.

There will be a spay and neuter clinic on site, and dogs and cats will be housed separately.

The current shelter is in an older building, that has its share of maintenance issues.

“It’s going to be easier on the employees to clean the animals, and more efficient to be able to get the animals out more often, we will have an enrichment area,  so people can go out and visit with animals outside and it will be a major uplift for the community,” said shelter director Rachel Allred.

The current shelter has been in operation on South Gloster Street since 1995 at a city owned building.
