Alabama’s Longest Serving Senator To Step Down
SELMA, Ala. (WCBI) – In Alabama, the states longest serving state senator says he’s stepping down in favor of his daughter.
Sources say Senator Hank Sanders announced this weekend that he’s not seeking a 10th term in office.
His daughter, Malika Sanders-Fortier will run for the Senate District 23 seat that covers the Selma area.
Sanders served in the senate for 35 years and originally planned to run for a final term.
He’s the 10th senator and only Democrat to decide to not seek re-election.
Sanders-Fortier qualified for the June 5 primary.
No other candidates qualified before Friday’s deadline.
