During his career Mr. Shelton served as President of Mississippi Association of Hospital Engineers; the Association of Hospital Engineers’ international committee of Building Codes and Standards; Chief of Rural Hill Volunteer Fire Department for twenty years, and board member for EMCC Foundation.

Mr. Shelton enjoyed being an avid hunter and fisherman and a past member of Columbus Bass Club. He was greeted by many friends and family members including his bride and soulmate, Mary Partridge with whom he will celebrate 55 years of marriage on Valentines Day; parents Clifford and Annie Belle Partridge; brother Edward “Red” Partridge; and sissy son-in-law number one Kimmy Mixon (his ride-or-die). Knowing he is at peace celebrating in the presence of Jesus is comforting to those he left behind: sister, Regina Boyte (Sonny); daughters: Melanie Benson (Byron- Sissy son-in-law number two) and Robin Mixon (Derric Belcher); five wonderful grandchildren (four who unconditionally embraced the title of “Johnnie’s Buddy” and one who teased him by adamantly refusing at random times): William Mixon, Clayton Mixon, Madeline Houston (Joe), Claire Benson (fiancée Justin Black), and Lily Benson; great grandson, Henry Houston; and a host of loved ones.

Visitation will be Saturday, February 15, 2025, from 12:00 P.M. to 2:00 P.M. at Lowndes Funeral Home in Columbus, MS. Funeral Service will be Saturday, February 15, 2025, at 2:00 P.M. at Lowndes Funeral Home in Columbus, MS. Lowndes Funeral Home, entrusted with all arrangements.

Born in Franklin County, MS, Johnnie was known for his intelligence, wit, impeccable character, and cat-like reflexes. He was known as the Franklin County Flash in his school days, excelling in all sports. After a brief time at Co-Lin Junior College, Johnnie enlisted in the Navy and traveled the world. Despite a failing memory, he could accurately recall his adventures as an E5 anti-submarine air controller and served on the USS Blandy during the Cuban Blockade. Though heroic, his service time was no different from how he led his life—valiantly putting others first.

Johnnie’s career as an electrician and maintenance technician in the paper mill industry spanned over four decades with his last 22 working years spent at Weyerhaeuser in Columbus and earlier years at Diamond International, International Paper, and Manville in Natchez, MS. He made many lifelong friends through his work and was always game for a healthy political debate, often taking the unpopular position for sport. This banter continued post-retirement at his “Coffee Club.”

Passionate about learning, Johnnie read voraciously from his eclectic collection of books and magazines and on-line resources. His relentless quest for knowledge led to him attending MUW enrichment classes for two years where he excelled in all subjects. Johnnie loved music, too, and even took guitar lessons after he retired and never lost his desire to play piano. He is probably playing “Last Date” now.

Johnnie set an exemplary example of chivalry for his children and grandchildren and was proud of each one. Whether he was watching Ole Miss football, driving the tractor, getting a haircut, “sneaking off ”for donuts or biscuits, or “heading to the barn,” his “buddies” were always welcome. He never missed an opportunity to treat them to a fun time. His influence was so impactful that the family vernacular includes the terms “Johnnie jokes,” “Johnnie money,” and many of his favorite lines including “It is what it is” and “Do your best.” He was known for soliciting volunteers to “rob a bank” with him when he wasn’t busy “sitting on his butt.”

Our family extends heartfelt gratitude for all prayers and acts of kindness with special thanks to those at Trinity Health Center who loved and took good care of our buddy. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to your charity of choice.

Josh served as a jet engine mechanic in the United State Air Force for 5 years. After fulfilling his duties in Japan, he returned home and graduated Cum Laude from both East Mississippi Community College and Athens State University.

Josh made friends easily and he had an easy smile that attracted people to him. He was a natural salesman and was highly regarded by his clients because he went the “extra mile” for them.   He loved  exercise and was always in good shape. He had a quirky sense of humor that served him well at family gatherings and among friends.

The spark that fueled Josh’s life was his family.  His love and adoration for his children, Sophia and Adelyn was plain to see.  He was always sharing his enthusiasm for the outdoors with them. To explore with his children in the outdoors was one of the delights of his life.  He loved showing them about nature sometimes in goofy, not always wise, but always fun ways.

Josh had personal struggles that would have done lesser men in, but  it never stopped him from providing for his family and spending time with his children.  In many ways Josh had a child’s heart that endeared him to his family and friends but he also had a spirit and a big strong heart which served him well both in health and illness.  He fought hard to the end.

Marie “Re” Mattison was the epitome of hospitality, generosity, and love. Her home was always open, her table beautifully set, and her legendary meals were a testament to her care for family and community. Re gave not from abundance but from her heart, often sacrificing her own comfort to ensure others were cared for. Her gifts extended far beyond food or material things—she gave her time, wisdom, and endless compassion.

Re shared a deep and enduring love with her husband, J.B. Mattison. Though widowed after 37 years of marriage, she spent the rest of her life serving her faith, family, church, and community. Her love transcended life, shaping her into a remarkable woman whose legacy lives on.

A proud military wife and mother, Re supported her loved ones’ service with unwavering pride. Her patriotism was matched by her devotion to Fairview Baptist Church, where she served faithfully for over 60 years.

Born into a large family to the late James P. Gates and Myrtle Morgan Gates, Re was one of twelve children. She cherished her Gates heritage and spoke fondly of her “Papa,” her brothers and sisters, and the life they enjoyed in Springhill, Alabama. The Gates family included her brothers: Elmer Gates, Edgar Gates, Lafayette Gates, Henry Gates, Clarence Gates, Owen Gates, and Earl Gates, as well as her sisters: Sadye Poindexter, Louise Morgan Bain, Catherine Southerland, and Doris Foley.

Above all, Re was a mother in every sense—nurturing, guiding, and loving not just her own children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren but anyone who crossed her path. Even after losing her beloved J.B., she carried his memory with grace and resilience, teaching us about the timeless nature of true love.

As we say goodbye, let us celebrate Re’s incredible life with gratitude. Her faith, generosity, hospitality, and warmth will continue to inspire us all. May we strive to live as she did—loving deeply, cherishing each moment, and leaving the world better than we found it.
