ABERDEEN, Miss. (WCBI) — A new coach and a renewed energy is at Aberdeen for 2015.

Eric Spann takes over for Mark Bray at Aberdeen as the Bulldogs hope their new head coach can help lead them to bigger and better things in the new season.

“It has been busy and a lot of work,” Spann said of the new job. “We’re already acclimated to the kids and now we’re trying to get better and build depth. We’re getting ready for a tough season.”

Don’t let those words fool you: the Deentown Dawgs bring back quite the bite for the 2015 season.

After tallying their 5th 10-win season in 7 years in 2014, coach Spann will lean heavily on what has gotten Aberdeen to where they are today.

“Speed, that’s our m-o,” Spann says. “Speed kills and we have it. We’re down on the big men up front but as far as speed we’re loaded with that.”

One of those speedsters is recent Memphis commit Jerrick Orr, who is one of the best athletes in the area. Add in athlete Tramonte Prather, who will take over for long time quarterback Josh Williams plus the top five tacklers from a season ago and Aberdeen is looking at more than just making it back to the postseason.

“We do want to do more,” Spann said. “We want to go deep. If we can get through the first six games injury free, we’ll be set up pretty good to make a run at it.”

Aberdeen has been so close to winning that elusive first State Championship in recent years and they hope this is their year to do it in class 3A.
