BELDEN, Miss. (WCBI) — A year without football seems almost unfathomable at any school in the state of Mississippi.
Tupelo Christian Preparatory School had to endure that season last year as the Eagles needed a year to build numbers and a team going into 2014. That year has arrived, and so has a renewed optimism.
“You definitely expect more than you had last year,” head coach Shaune Holiday said. “I’m looking for our guys to show the guts that this school is all about.”
The Eagles will play as an MHSAA 1A Independent in 2014 before moving back into division play in 2015, which means the youth for this upcoming season has a chance to get a year under their belts.
“We’ll be a lot of sophomores, a few juniors, possibly one or two seniors this year,” said coach Holiday. “We’ll still be a young team but these kids have really been working in the off-season.
“I think they missed football this past season. There’s nothing like that Friday night experience. These kids are really looking forward to get out there and having that experience again.”
Going into the new season, coach Holiday is looking past the field to see what his team will rely upon for those Friday night experiences that return for his Eagles.
“It’s an intangible and it’s called heart. We have a lot of heart. Our kids have it and I’m looking for that heart to turn into wins. We’re going to build off of that.”
TCPS will begin 2014 with two road games at Tipton Rosemark in Tennessee and Thrasher before returning home to host Macon Road Baptist on September 5th.
