SMITHVILLE, Miss. (WCBI) — The prodigal son has returned.
Or something like that.
Chad Collums has taken over as the new head coach of the Smithville football team after Bubba Tacker stepped down to take an administrative position and it couldn’t have come at a better time for the former Seminole.
“Ever since I left this town, I’ve been thinking about it;” coach Collums said. “I tell everybody I come in contact with about Smithville that on Saturday mornings during the fall I would check Smithville’s score to see how they did. The State Championship game I was up in the stands cheering them on. It means a lot to come home and be a part of the program again.”
The former Smithville football star has returned to his roots to be the head man of the Noles, and he hopes with the team he has returning that they can make it back to Jackson and bring home that coveted State Championship.
“The kids want to get back,” Collums said. “The one thing about these kids is they’re eager to win. It has always been that way here. It kind of puts something in the back of their mind when they make the State Championship because they want to go back.”
Big name stars Drew Lann and Tyler Hood have graduated and moved on from Smithville. That means coach Collums will look to new faces in some of his skill positions.
Coach says though it’s the big uglies in the trenches that will be a strong point this season.
“I feel real good about the offensive and defensive lines,” Collums said. “We have a good group of guys that will be up front and that’s an important part of our team.”
The Noles will hope to duplicate one of their best seasons in school history in 2014 as they begin with two road games at Hatley and Belmont before the home opener versus Caledonia.
