BOONEVILLE, Miss. (WCBI) — Winning football games is nothing new at Booneville.
The Blue Devils have won 8+ games in each of the last 3 years and haven’t missed the playoffs in over a decade.
Head coach Mike Mattox expects that trend to continue this year with his team.
“Our expectations are to always make the playoffs,” coach Mattox said. “We’ve had a great tradition here and that’s what we expect out of our kids: playoffs first then see how far you can make a run.”
With one key piece returning on offense in senior Jack Simpson at quarterback, coach Mattox knows that run could happen this year.
“It’s always a plus when you have your quarterback returning,” Mattox said. “We lost several kids up front but having the quarterback back there directing things is a plus.
“We have a lot of holes to fill but we’re going to have a good mix of young kids.”
Coach Mattox also doesn’t hold back when talking about how he sees the division this year.
While from a far view Region 1-3A appears to be wide open, there’s still one team that coach will single out to be on the look out for.
“I still think North Pontotoc will be the team to beat,” coach said. “Kossuth, Mooreville, Central and Belmont are traditionally tough. Compared to last year though it is more of a toss up. Still, North Pontotoc is the favorite in our division.”
