BELMONT, Miss. (WCBI) — The Belmont Cardinals continued their recent run of success in making the postseason this past year.
For six consecutive seasons, Belmont has made it to the playoffs. That’s the expectation once again for this season as the Cardinals hope to make some noise this season.
“We’re looking for big things and we’re looking forward to a good year,” assistant coach Jason Coker said. “Kids are working hard with a good attitude. They’re easy to be around and that makes our jobs a lot easier.”
Last year’s 3-8 record may not be something to ride home about but three of those encounters were decided by 7 points or less.
With the strong nucleus of leadership returning, coach Coker believes this Belmont team can surprise some people.
“We have some good seniors coming back,” Coker said. “Chandler Higginbottom is back. He led the team in tackles the last 3 years. We’re looking for big things out of him running the football and when he plays on defense.”
Higgingbottom will be a major key going into the season as the Cardinals feature him in their Wing-T offense that coach Coker says will be a strength this upcoming year.
“We have a strong base to build around,” Coker said. “It’s an offense we have ran here for a long time. We’ll build on that since we know we can move the football.”
Belmont will start the 2014 campaign at home versus the defending 1A North Champions in Smithville before visiting Mantachie the following week.
