STARKVILLE, Miss. (WCBI) — Some Starkville area kids are getting a lesson they’ll take home to their parents about where food, clothing and other daily products come from. The MSU Horse Park on Poorhouse Road is turned into a farm with learning stations.
Farm animals are a part of seven exhibits at the “farmtastic” event where thousands of area third graders are experiencing agriculture at their fingertips.
“It’s an amazing place it teaches you about animals and what they eat and stuff,” said Caroline Reed/Henderson Ward Stewart.
“Its great because this is where we mostly get our food from to make us grow strong and happy. We have happy lives so its like really good,” said Adriena Hayes/henderson Ward Stewart.
And some students may have no idea where milk or peanut butter comes from.
“Most of our children these days are three to four generations removed from the farm. And they don’t understand that agriculture effects their daily lives,” said Julie White/MSU Extension Agent.
In the fun filled environment the children are sure to learn that cows give milk and spray starch is made using corn.
“Most of them are telling me their cotton shirts came from a sheep. And we know that cotton grow on a plant. So they are learning things today that they are just amazed by the things that they are getting to see and the things that they are getting to touch and do, said Julie White.
The exhibits highlight every commodity produced in Mississippi. The farmtastic village got started three years ago and has grown from just 4 to seven rooms. There are plans to make farmtastic a statewide traveling educational exhibit.
The exhibits are opened to the public Saturday from 9:00 a.m until noon.
