VIDEO: BP Oil Compensates Mississippi With $2.2 Billion For Oil Spill Damages
JACKSON, Miss. (WCBI)- The state of Mississippi is expected to receive $150 million from BP Oil.
This is the first payment that Mississippi will receive for the economic damages resulting from the 2010 Deepwater Horizon disaster.
The federal government and BP finalized a nearly $20 billion settlement in federal court.
This agreement is the largest environmental settlement in history.
In all, Mississippi will receive approximately $2.2 billion in compensation from BP.
Governor Phil Bryant already has plans for the money.
“”I’m looking for those fundings to go to the Mississippi Gulf Coast; that’s where the spill was at, that’s where the damage took place. So after we make sure that we have the environmental recovery and economic recovery, we can talk about other investments,” says Governor Bryant.
Mississippi will receive compensation for damages over the next 17 years.
