VIDEO: Aberdeen City Wide Clean Up Day
ABERDEEN, Miss. (WCBI)— Many are familiar with the saying, “presentation is everything”. On Saturday the City of Aberdeen takes it to a new level.
Keep Aberdeen beautiful was the message Saturday as residents, students and city officials turned out for the city’s first clean-up day.
“Well it means everything to me to get our young people out. To get our senior citizens out. To just get the community our period to help us clean the city,” says, Aberdeen Mayor Maurice Howard.
Starting the community-wide clean up was a grassroots effort.
“There’s a very concerned citizen that would come to our board meeting every week and she would stress the issue about the littering. So I came up with the idea for us to get out side to clean up. Get people involved, get every alderman involved go to their wards and make sure that we are keeping the streets clean,” says Howard.
One volunteer says keeping his city clean is his top priority.
“I’m volunteering because it’s in my good heart. I just like getting active with the community and see things go a better way. Always see the better outcome of everything,” says Volunteer Markeen Griffin.
Though many residents showed up to do their part, the city of Aberdeen still had help.
“Home depot and our contact Ms. Latoya Lloyd were awesome and very instrumental in basically gifting all the trash bags and all the resources that we’re using today so we send a huge thank you to them they have been so helpful from even hats and tee-shirts so the kids don’t get too hot, water everything you can think of. They’ve been a great help,” says Public Relations Specialist Justin Crosby.
Mayor Howard says they hope to do this event two or three times next year.
