Matadors' All-ACCAC forward signs letter of intent to play for Lady Rebels in '08-`09
Yuma, Arizona - May 1, 2008 -- Arizona Western College is proud to announce that AWC Women's Basketball player Tanya Clark has signed an official letter of intent to attend Dixie State College of Utah and play basketball for the Rebels this fall. Clark is the first Matador sophomore women's basketball player to sign with a 4-year college this season. The announcement comes a little over two months after Clark ended her three-year career as a Matador.
The maturity, work ethic and presence that Clark showed-whether she was on the court or on the sideline-made her the benchmark and unquestioned leader of the women's basketball team all three years that she was part of it. Arriving in Yuma in August of 2005, Clark immediately made an impact in the paint and in the scoring column. Clark led the team in steals with 51, and her 7.5-rebounds-per-game average was not only tops on the squad but also 9 th -best in the ACCAC. Her seven points per game was 4 th -best on the squad and her grit and determination every time she stepped on the court made her the player that her teammates looked to in providing the team's emotional spark. It also whetted Matador fans' appetite for what Clark could bring to an experienced group for the 2006-07 season.
That plan took a different turn from what most people-including Clark-imagined. A painful groin injury that Clark battled through toward the latter half of her freshman campaign lingered on into the preseason of the '06-'07 campaign. Clark bravely played through it until it finally put her on the sideline eight games into the 2006-07 season. But even in street clothes on the bench, Clark 's leadership was a benefit to the younger players. Clark didn't lose any eligibility after being declared a medical redshirt, and kept up well with her studies, but suddenly had a decision to make about her basketball future. Most-including AWC Women's Head Basketball Coach Patrick Cunningham-expected Clark to move on.
Once again, the plans changed-to the delight of Cunningham and the Matadors' fans. Despite having several decent four-year college possibilities, the native of Beaumont , California , decided a third year at AWC would suit her best. Once again, her tenacity on the court was contagious, and helped lead the 2007-08 Lady Matadors to their best overall record (21-9) in five years. `TC' was the team leader in three statistical categories in '07-'08, pacing the Matadors with 7.4 rebounds (13 th -best in the ACCAC) and 2.4 assists per game while shooting a stellar 76.9% from the free throw line (4 th -best in the ACCAC). `TC' was also among the conference leaders in scoring (10.4 points per game), field goal percentage (50.7%, T-7 th ACCAC) and blocked shots (1.1 per game T-4 th ACCAC). Clark earned 2 nd Team All-ACCAC honors this past March. "Tanya's a steal for a four-year program because of the maturity, athleticism and versatility she brings to any basketball program at any level," remarked Cunningham. "She's really improved her perimeter game, and will continue to improve on that aspect. She's also been outstanding in the classroom, and has an opportunity to finish with a Master's Degree by the time she's finished with her athletic eligibility."
Clark heads to a program that just finished its second year of playing at the NCAA Division II level (after moving up from the two-year NJCAA level). The Lady Rebels finished the 2007-08 season on a roll, winning 6 of their last 7 games to finish with a 16-11 overall mark and a 3 rd -place finish in the Pacific West Conference. The Rebels' Women's Head Basketball Coach is fully aware of just what kind of player she's getting in Clark . "The thing we love most about Tanya is how competitive she is and her leadership both on and off the court," DSC Head Coach Angela Kristensen said in a Dixie State College press release. "She is the epitome of what a student-athlete should represent and we could not be more excited to sign a player of her caliber."

Barton moves into NJCAA semifinals with 55-45 win over Southeastern Illinois
The Barton County Community College women's basketball team has reached a spot only two previous Cougar teams have been - the NJCAA National Semifinals. Barton reached that destination with a 55-45 win over Southeastern Illinois Thursday night at the Bicentennial Center in Salina. The Cougars defense shut down the usually good-shooting Falcons en route to the win. Barton will now get the No. 1 ranked team in the NJCAA the No. 1 seed in the tournament when it takes on Central Arizona Friday night at 8 pm in semifinal action. Barton will be looking to reach the finals for the 1st time in school history with a win. The Cougars are now 34-2 on the season while Central Arizona is 33-0. Southeastern Illinois fell to 32-3 with the loss.
Highlights
Barton used a 10-0 early in the contest to grab a 10-2 lead and the Cougars never trailed the rest of the night. Southeastern Illinois would get within four points on a couple of occasions in the opening half but Barton would spend much of the remainder of the game leading by double digits.
The Cougars defense shutdown the Falcons, who came into the contest scoring 75 points a contest and shooting nearly 50 percent from the floor in its 1st 34 games. Barton, however, limited Southeastern to its lowest point total of the season in 45 points and held the Falcons to just 31 percent shooting on 21-of-68 from the field. The previous low total for the season was 52 points.
Barton took a 28-21 lead to halftime and quickly pushed it to double digits on a 3-pointer by Jessica Halsig. The lead grew to 16 points at 41-25 with 15 minutes to play - about the same time frame Barton has hit a dry spell its last 3 games and let it opponents back in the game. This time the Cougars continued to expand the lead and it grew to as high as 44-25.
Southeastern did have a run in them late in the contest. Barton led 50-32 with 8 minutes to play when the Falcons went on a 13-3 run to make it 53-45 with 3 minutes to play - the only time the lead would get under 10 after the opening basket of the half. But Southeastern did not score the final 3:17 of the contest as Barton advanced to the semifinals for the 3rd time in school history.
Courtney Sturdivant led Barton with 14 followed by Jessica Halsig with 13. Inga Muciniece grabbed 12 rebounds and blocked 3 shots in the win. Kristine Silaraja led Barton with 6 assists followed by Muciniece with 5 and Sturdivant with 4.
Barton will now turn focus to Central Arizona in the semifinals. The Cougars have never played for the NJCAA Championship. The last time Barton was in the semifinals was 1990 when the Cougars finished 4th. Barton also took 4th in 1981. With the win Barton also tied the school record for wins in a season with 34. Barton was 34-4 in 1990 and 2000.
