Video: Winston County Shows Signs of Progress

LOUISVILLE, Miss. (WCBI) — Rebuilding after a devastating tornado can be tough, but over a year later Winston County residents have many signs of improvement to look to.

It takes a lot to keep a community going.

“It needs a lot of parts, economic development, needs jobs, education, needs healthcare,” says Louisville Mayor Will Hill.

Two projects in Winston County are helping to achieve that goal.
Nothings left of the old hospital…and construction on the new building is coming fast.

“It’s been let, contracts been signed, the final financing pieces are being put together, so it’s an exciting time for Winston Medical Center,” says Mayor Hill.

Next week final numbers should be released as the board is updated.

“Everything that’s taken place, where we’re headed and have a good Q&A session,” says Mayor Hill.

Across town, Winston Plywood is working hard to get up and running.

“Plywood is revving up, they’re hiring some key individuals and working on putting their equipment in place,” says the mayor.

That plant could hire around 400 people but Louisville Mayor Will Hill says it’s economic reach will extended much further.

“It’s just been very difficult finding outlets for all the pine in this region and this will affect a much larger region then just Winston County, this will affect many many counties around so that’s why it’s critical,” he says.

Winston Plywood is on budget and schedule to open in March.

Mayor Hill says there are many other tornado recover projects making it’s way through Winston County, but he couldn’t give us any details just yet.
