"Inspiring the Next Generation: Exceptional Mississippi Women"
Location: Fulton
A former slave turned international concert performer, a Pulitzer Prize winning author, a five-time Olympian - these are just three of the women included in this exhibit showing at Itawamba Community College in Fulton campus Learning Resource Center through November 20. There is no charge for viewing the exhibit. LRC hours are 8am-9pm on Monday-Thursday: 8am-4:30pm on Friday and 4-8pm on Sunday. This traveling exhibit is produced by the Museum Division of the Mississippi Department of Archives and History and introduces audiences to 32 women in eight categories who changed the history of the state and the nation. Learn about women of Mississippi active in civil rights, education reform, woman suffrage and government, as well as those who excelled in performance, art, literature and athletics. United Way Grocery Grab: Tickets Avail. Now to Win

Cook Elementary Fine Arts Magnet School is coordinating a Grocery Grab with Sunflower to benefit the United Way. The winner will be selected at Cook's Kid Fest Nov. 10. The winner will be given five minutes to run through the store on Nov. 20 and grab food items or the winner may opt to take a $200 gift card from Sunflower. This is a great way to help with Thanksgiving groceries and support the United Way. Health Fair / Winston
Winstona Medical Center Hospital and Nursing Home is hosting its annual Health Fair today from 9am-2pm at the First Baptist Church Family Life Center. The purpose of the event is to educate citizens in Winston County of all the resources that are available in the healthcare industry. There will be an array of services that will be provided for FREE, as well flu shots that will be $15 and they will file insurance for those who have Medicare. The public is invited to participate where there will be FREE health screenings, door prizes, and Renansant Bank will be providing hot dogs. Other screenings will include a cholesterol and glucose screening, but it requires a 12-hour fast for best results. There will also be dozens of exhibitors on site. 4-County Energy Efficiency Expo

Hikes for Tykes
Location: Holly Springs
Strawberry Plains Audubon Center continues their monthly program today which introduces toddlers, ages 2-4, to the adventure of walking on trails! Taking place from 10:30-11:30am, this program will start with an introduction/story and then you will hit the trail. These hikes are short by design and provide exercise in a stimulating environment. It will be led by a staff member or certified volunteer who is eager to point out the colorful, wiggly or amazing life along the trail. All children must be accompanied by an adult. The fee is $3/toddler (adults hike free). Strollers are permitted but must be able to go over grass and soft hills. Space for this program is limited, so RSVP required. Vardaman Sweet Potato Festival
The 36th annual Vardaman Sweet Potato Festival kicks off this Saturday with the arts and crafts festival on Main Street. In addition there will be a 5K run/walk (9am), judging of various contests including sweet potato creatures (10am), a sweet potato tasting booth (11am), pie eating contests and the fire department's "famous barbecue chicken dinner". Empty Bowls for Hunger

"Empty Bowls" is a national non-profit organization that sanctions the use of its name in conjunction with events that raise funds to alleviate hunger, both nationally and abroad. MUW has taken up the challenge. This event will take place today from 11am-1:30pm on the front lawn at the Shops at Brickerton located at the intersection of Hwy. 82 and Military Road in Columbus. In preparation for the this event the MUW Art Department, as well as the community created 500 hand made bowls. Today you can choose any bowl and purchase is for only $10. The bowl will be filled with delicious soup you can eat which was made by the MUW Culinary Department. At the end of the day the bowl is your's to take home. The $10 will go to feed someone either in Columbus (through Loaves and Fishes) or children in Africa (through Global Connections). In this class you will enjoy getting to know the canvas, palette knife and brush. Sharon Foster will give as much or as little instruction as you want. "The Emperor's New Clothes"

Theatre MSU will present their public performance of "The Emperor's New Clothes" by Michele L. Vacca today at 7:30pm on the McComas Theatre Main Stage on the Starkville campus. Directed by Marianne Ulmer, this classic fairy tale will appeal to audiences of all ages while teaching lessons on the dangers of vanity and greed. Traditional Music by the North Mississippi Dulcimer Association

This association teaches dulcimer history, tradition, craftsmanship and music by sharing its knowledge and talents. The Appalachian mountain dulcimer is the first instrument developed in the United States. Dating back to the early 1800s the dulcimer is an instrument whose very name means "sweet sound". Wrapped with Love
Location: Columbus
In keeping with annual tradition, Malco theatres present "Wrapped with Love" for the continued research of childhood diseases at Memphis' own St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. This program kicks off Thanksgiving Day and runds through Christmas Day at all 31 Malco Theatre locations,including those in Mississippi. Theatre employees will be selling bows for $1 each and the bows are all hand-made from actual film which is made of about 24 frames (about one second of a movie). The bows are made from reels of movie trailers and are stapled and sealed with a special sticker that reads "Wrapped with Love...to benefit the kids of St. Jude". These bows are believed to become collectors' items when the film industry progresses into digital technology. Since 1999, Malco Theatres has raised over $375,000 for St. Jude. Consider giving to this great cause and receive one of these very unique items. |
