School H1N1 Vaccines are Free

Kids in the Columbus School District have the option of getting H1N1 Vaccines for free starting Wednesday.

The district is teaming up with the Mississippi State Department of Health.

Lee Middle School nurse Maris Braddock says it may not be a bad idea for parents to consider letting their child get H1N1 vaccines.

"We had the swine flu come through here for a couple of weeks and the absenteeism got high, so we would advise for them to get the vaccine to help protect them while they're at school," said Braddock.

Superintendent Dr. Del Phillips tells WCBI News that the school system has been assured that they'll have enough vaccinations for every child who wants to get one.

Parents will be given information about the Swine Flu; they should read it before making their decision.

"We're giving parents the opportunity to choose whether or not they want their child to be vaccinated or not," said Dr. Phillips.

If parents do decide to let their child take the flu vaccine, they have to sign a consent form, they also need to consider a few simple tips before sending their child to school that day.

"We advise you take Advil or Tylenol, some kind of pain reliever will help with the pain and the side effects that they might experience," Braddock replied.

It's also important that parents include an emergency contact number on the consent form and remember, the shots are free and they're only available the day they're assigned to the school.

H1N1 vaccines will be at Columbus High, Lee Middle, Hunt and Franklin Elementary on Wednesday.

Cook Elementary vaccines will be Thursday, November 12th.

Sale and Stokes Beard Elementary will be Friday November 13th.

They'll be given at Fairview on the 16th.
